How Tall is Our Building?
The St. George Tower has 30 stories above ground
and is 315 feet high. Until recently, it was the tallest residential
building in Brooklyn Heights,
an honor that now goes to the apartment building at 180 Montague Street
completed in 2000, which is 331 feet. The tallest building in Brooklyn
Heights is the Montague Court building at 16 Court Street, a commercial/office
building at 390 feet.
Why is our building called the St. George?
The name of the original Hotel St. George derives from the St. George's
Tavern that stood on the same location between 1776 and 1783. This
tavern may be related to an earlier (1774) St. George's tavern on what
is now Columbia Heights near Middagh Street. Before the revolutionary
war, one of several ferries that docked at the base of Joralemon Street
was called the "St. George."
